What is OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP)
OCLP is a community tool built on top of the bootloader OpenCore, which allows you to install and run newer versions of macOS on older, officially unsupported Macs. It does not perform permanent disk intervention - most patches run in memory (near-native approach).
Key points
- Primarily supports Intel-based Macs (not Apple Silicon or PowerPC).
- The goal is to „breathe life“ into older Macs (compatibility, graphics, Wi-Fi, AirDrop, OTA updates with limitations).
How it works in practice - a shortened procedure
- Back up all data (Time Machine / external disk). (required)
- Download OCLP (official GitHub / Dortania site).
- Create a bootable USB with macOS installer via OCLP (the application has the option Create macOS Installer).
- Build & Install OpenCore to USB (OCLP will create a modified EFI with the necessary patches and kexts).
- Boot from USB (Hold Option at startup), to start the macOS installation on the target drive.
- Post-install - after installation, play the necessary post-install patches and (optionally) install OpenCore into the internal EFI to boot the Mac without USB.
- Test functionality (Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, sleep, iCloud continuity, etc.) and possibly use additional kexts/patches.
For specific steps including OCLP options and necessary patches, read the official guide Creating macOS Installers a Post-installation in the OCLP documentation.
What to expect (benefits)
- You install a newer macOS, you get new features and apps.
- „Near-native“ experience without permanent firmware patches (most changes run in memory).
- Option to extend the life of older hardware.
Risks and limitations (important!)
- Unofficial solution - Apple does not support OCLP. Updates to macOS may disable OCLP.
- Some features may not work 100 % (GPU acceleration, Wi-Fi/BT, Continuity, T2-related stuff).
- If you have a Mac with T2 or Apple Silicon, access to internal storage/encryption may be limited; OCLP not supported by Apple Silicon.
- You may need to disable some security features (SIP, Secure Boot), which increases the risk.
- Data loss during installation errors - that's why backup is critical.
Recommendations before the start
- Make a complete backup (Time Machine + copies of key files).
- Read more Supported Models on the OCLP page to verify that your model is supported.
- Keep a secondary Mac handy (for USB creation), a sufficient USB-flash drive (16+ GB) and stable internet.
- Read the official Dortania guide and GitHub release notes.
Where to find help and documentation
- GitHub (official repo) - downloads, issues, releases.
- Dortania documentation (OCLP) - step-by-step guide, models, post-install.
- Communities (Reddit, Discord) - useful for troubleshooting.
