How to rescue data after liquid enters a MacBook
1️⃣
Immediate action after a crash
Shut down MacBook immediately - don't try to turn it on!
Disconnect power (MagSafe/USB-C).
If it's an older model, leave the Mac open (in the shape of the letter „V“) and let it dry, but not with hot air.
Ideally deliver to the workshop as soon as possible, preferably within 24 hours.
💡 The longer the device is energized after contact with the liquid, the greater the risk corrosion and short circuit.
2️⃣
Diagnostics in the workshop
The service will do it first:
Disassembly and visual inspection motherboards.
Identify the point of spillage (coffee, water, juice, wine - different liquids leave different deposits).
Chemical cleaning of the plate (e.g. isopropyl alcohol or ultrasound).
Checking power circuits and storage connections.
If the logic board is damaged but the disk is fine, proceed to step 3.
3️⃣
Data rescue
It depends on the type of storage:
🔸
Older MacBooks (up to about 2016)
They have removable SSD drive, that can be removed and read on another device.
👉 In this case, the data is easily copied using a dedicated adapter.
🔸
Newer MacBooks with T2 chip (2018-2020)
SSD is integrated on the motherboard and the data is encrypted with T2 chip.
It means:
data cannot be read outside the original plate,
must first commissioning board or T2 chip,
in case of T2 damage, data can be recovered only if Secure Enclave is running (part of the chip with the key).
Services such as AppleFix or other specialized labs can:
To be done temporary power repair,
connect the logic board externally,
a back up encrypted data via the Thunderbolt interface in the so-called. Target Disk Mode.
🔸
Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3)
For these models, the memory is integrated directly into the SoC.
Data recovery is only possible if the Mac revive to DFU or Target Mode, otherwise the data is irretrievably lost.
4️⃣
Recovery and backup
If the device can be revived, service:
connects a Mac to another Mac in mode Target Disk Mode or Share Disk (via Recovery),
copies the data to an external drive,
possibly help restore a backup from Time Machine.
💰
Price and chances of success
Diagnostics: 1 000 CZK
Cleaning/repairing the motherboard: 3-10000 CZK
Data rescue (T2, Apple Silicon): 3 000-10 000 CZK, according to the damage
Success Rate:
80-90 % on older Macs with removable SSD
50-70 % on Macs with T2
30-50 % for Macs with M1/M2 (depending on chip and power supply status)
⚠️
Important
If the liquid contains sugar or salt, immediately increasing the risk of corrosion.
Never Mac do not plug into the mains after a spill!
Don't try drying in rice - it won't remove deposits or electrolytes.
