What is BridgeOS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

BridgeOS<\/strong> is a special operating system that runs on auxiliary chip T1 or T2<\/strong> in some MacBooks, iMacs and Mac mini (roughly 2016-2020).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This chip has its own ARM processor and a separate system that works next to macOS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What BridgeOS is for:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  • Managed by Mac security features<\/strong> - e.g. Touch ID, Secure Enclave, data encryption, access authentication.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Provided by Secure Boot<\/strong> and macOS integrity check.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Managed by built-in camera, microphone and sensors<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Enables communication between the main macOS and the T2 chip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    How to update BridgeOS<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    BridgeOS is does not update independently<\/strong> \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    is updated automatically with macOS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Procedure:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    1. Open \uf8ff \u2192 System Settings \u2192 General \u2192 Software Update<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. If a new version of macOS is available, run the update.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. The installation also updates T2 chip firmware<\/strong>, and therefore BridgeOS.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Do not perform any manual installation of BridgeOS!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Manual interventions (e.g. via DFU mode) are only for service or firmware repair using Apple Configurator 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n\n\n\n

      Restore BridgeOS (if the Mac won't start)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      If a Mac with a T2 chip doesn't boot (black screen, flashing LED, non-functioning Touch ID), BridgeOS may be corrupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      In this case, it is possible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • use Apple Configurator 2<\/strong> from another Mac,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • connect a problem Mac via USB-C,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • and make revive or restore firmware<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
